Usually it's because I'm boring, but I'll try to post things that are going on now.

I got my teacher assignment for UTeach! So excited. I'm sending her an email after this. I called my folks and let them know, I'm so hyped.

I also started reading the manual to the original Pokemon games, its really fun in short bursts. Like chewing gum made of nostalgia!

Coffee is amazing.

Blastoise is my favorite looking pokemon, even though in many ways he makes the least sense. He has cannons in his shell.

This weekend is the new set of Pokemon's prerelease, and I want to go, but it is $25. I have to think about it. ALSO, SUPERBOWL! My mother and I both want to get Danny to play football, and I suggested buying him Eyeshield 21, a really fun manga about football. It worked for me... I've become interested in boxing and football through manga, I'm a giant nerd.

Ummm.... coffee is amazing?

Bye!

Some background: I work Wed and Saturday 11-4 at a local comic shop. So, the comic shop I work at sent out an email with this:
"_______________ will be opening at 11:00AM on Wednesdays again. Our Saturday hours have also changed. We will now be open from Noon to 6:00 PM, just like Sunday. Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday we will not be open Thursday (11/27/08), and Friday we will be open from Noon to 6:00PM. The holiday will also affect New Comic Day next week. Comics will be shipped a day late and New Comic Day will be Thursday (12/04/08)."

What? Why wasn't I told about this? Will I now work more on Sat? Why wasn't I told about this? The only thing I can assume is that I am being fired, or having Sat taken away from me or my boss just doesn't give a fuck. Either way I'm pissed off that I wasn't deemed important enough to know when I would be working or not working now. What kind of terrible employer doesn't let their employees know when they change their employee's hours?

Not a good week. Lots of studying and a paper to write, but this week should be nice, lots of time to catch up on studying I overlooked. I was expecting to get fired this week, but didn't which is good because of the money. I was expecting it to be shitty, but now I feel a little better.

We finished Twelfth Night for SOS, and up next is King Lear. I'm trying to get Lauren settled on a deck for Sunday, but she doesnt seem to like any of the ones I come up with. I think she may want to make a water/psychic one, but not sure. Sunday is a big tournament, which should be a lot of fun.

Edit: 6:14 PM, after a whole day of working to mull it over, I am actually more upset, but I'm not entirely sure at whom.

Comics I will pay for.

Hey guys, I just wanted to go over some of the comics I deem worthy of my $. These are ones that come out regularly, not those anthology type thingys that come out ever year or so. Anyway, here we go.
Action Comics (by Geoff Johns)

This is the typical Superman comic, but there is something about it. It just feels like such an archetype, that it just is great. Geoff Johns is awesome, and it looks like he has the title for at least one more year, so yay! Also, the art is really nice. Superman looks like he is wearing the costume Christopher Reeves wore, or something like it. It also has Supergirl and all of Clark Kent's friends and family etc, and feels really epic in how it is paced.

Amazing Spider-Man

This is just awesome. It keeps out of all the confusing Marvel stuff (I'm looking at you, Secret Invasion) and just gives me straight up, funny awesome Spider-Man. The art and writing changes every few weeks, but it is so much fun to read. My fav story so far? Spider-man fights an Aztec god summoned by a mathematician during a blizzard. BRILLIANT! The pic I put up is from the next issue, where apparently he teams up with Colbert? Sounds good.

Batman (by Grant Morrison)

The batman story right now is basically that Batman is being destroyed on every aspect by a mysterious group of villains with unknown motives. They have taken out his sidekicks, Alfred, defamed his family (showing that his dad was a drug addict and maybe had his mother killed) and shot him up with a bunch of drugs, and pretty much drove him insane. This weeks issue was so amazing, I flipped out at the end. SO good!

Final Crisis

OKay, here is where I might lose you. This book makes no sense. It tries to encompass the whole DC universe, but I don't understand 1/3 of what is going on. One whole plotline involves a gun that shoots backwards through time. HOWEVER, it is fun! I really enjoy trying to learn about all these new characters and whatnot that all the DC nerds really know. Even better than Final Crisis though, are some of the tie-ins. Rogue's Revenge and Legion of Three Worlds look amazing, and Rage of the Red Lanterns comes out soon as well.

Gantz

This is awesome. It's about a mysterious machine/human/being that copies dead people, then makes them fight monsters for points. When you reach 100 points, you have a choice of leaving the game, reviving someone who has died in the game, or leaving and going back to your normal life. Fucking great characters, awesome monsters, and well written to boot. The current English series is at Volume 2, but I think in Japanese its up to Volume 20 or so, and still going.

Invincible

This is sort of like the story of Superman's son, only not as lame as that sounds, and with a totally original universe. The story is so well done, I say that this is my favorite superhero book to anyone who asks. Ask me?

Walking Dead

Best zombie story ever made, hands down. Very sad, but so good.

After waiting 5 minutes the login screen came up and told me that the computer was reserved for someone. There was nobody on the list when I sat down so I figured I could grab it. URG. Weird thing is, when I went to the reserve station and got a comp, there was a girl with the exact same situation, so she gave me the evil eye and got up when she couldn't log on. I feel a little bad, but its funny.

Heroes Season 3 started last night, that was fantastic! I'm so glad it looks like this season will have actual conflict, instead of one episode of action and 6 of boring like Season 2. I think they learned their lesson. Its kinda weird how Heroes and Lost have both had mediocre second seasons. Anyways, I hope the "Villains" turn out to be more interesting than they are, because who gives a shit about a bunch of killers. I want more twisted characters like Sylar (who btw, looks like he will become even more twisted.)

This is my rough draft. I had to totally change my concept after reading a great paper.

Greg Webster
What do you call a one-legged captain in a hot tub?: A study into Ahab's motivations

"There is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself." This line sets off the line of thought that perhaps Ahab's motivations for revenge and even the fact that revenge is Ahab's true quest may not be as simple as the reader initially thinks. Ahab himself has place all the world's evils into Moby Dick in his mind, as he hunts them down with a monomania that cannot be accurately described by himself or any of the other characters. To understand Ahab's motivations, it is necessary to first look into the text and discover who and what exactly Ahab is. It is then necessary to pinpoint the exact theme of Moby Dick. While there are many possible themes presented by literary critics such as Man vs. Nature, Good vs. Evil, or Fate vs. free will, the true meaning may lie in Self vs. Others, specifically in respect to race.
Since we are looking at Ahab through the perception of Ishmael it is important for us to try to look through his eyes. Ishmael suggests his race in the opening line of the book, “Call me Ishmael.” Why not, “My name is Ishmael” or “I am Ishmael”? By using the word “call” he suggests that his name may not be Ishmael. Perhaps it is merely a name he uses when he is sailing, or a name he has newly chosen? There is a historical precedent from the early 20th century for sailors to chose their own names while wandering or traveling: that of pre-Civil War blacks in America. Is Ishmael black? This question begs to be examined further, and while it is very questionable, there are suggestions that he is not white, or does not associate himself as being Caucasian. W. Jeffrey Bolster points out that Ishmael is sometimes a slave name, and that in the Bible the mother of Ishmael is said to be a “bondservant.”(Genesis, 21:10-13) Ishmael states that “there yet lurks an elusive something in the innermost idea of this hue [whiteness], which strikes more panic to the soul than that redness which strikes more panic to the soul than that redness which affrights in blood.”(Melville, p 180) This statement about whiteness suggests that there is a certain fear that Ishmael possesses against the inherent idea of whiteness. In terms of pay, Ishmael is being paid a significantly low amount, which he seems to think is appropriate for his position. While at first we think that it is due to his never having ridden a whaling ship, but could it perhaps be because he is black and is therefore expecting to be paid much less than anyone else? Ishmael’s self-description as a “great digger of ditches” suggests that he is poor, another possible hint towards his ethnicity, as most blacks at the time were extremely poor. A very leading statement by Ishmael is when he notices the “jeering glances” from other passengers at himself and Queequeg, he scoffs “as though a white man were anything more dignified than a whitewashed negro.” This could be taken to mean Ishmael refers to himself as a whitewashed negro, or a half-blooded black, or mulatto. Melville leaves the question of Ishmael’s race open, and while it is never explicitly stated, this is probably to draw attention to his race instead of divert attention from it. However, working on the assumption that Ishmael is either black or a mulatto, it changes the perception
When we are first introduced to Ahab, "he looked like a man cut away from the stake, when the fire has over-runningly wasted all the limbs without consuming them, or taking away on particle from their compacted aged robustness. His whole high, broad form, seemed made of solid bronze." (Melville, p. 125) While this statement seems relatively innocuous, in the relation of race it has a significant suggestion. Besides the obvious hint that Ahab is “bronze” the more menacing statement of him being “cut away from the stake” suggests he looks like someone who was being lynched, a possibility that while very rare for white men, would have been a strong thought for Ishmael upon seeing another mulatto man.
Now that we have established the possibility that both Ishmael and Ahab are mulattos, what does that mean? They would both be strongly affected by the prevailing thoughts of their times, that whites were superiors to blacks, and that they were part white and part black. Ishmael obviously views whiteness as something to be feared in most cases, even though it can be beautiful (as can be seen in chapter 42.) However, Ahab’s view on color is something that can only be speculated at. Is he hunting the whiteness of the whale, or the blackness? Ahab seems to have a double identity, as he is said to be “trying to make the white world his own” and that he “finds himself in a world where he does not belong.” In fact, it isn’t until his death when we could say he definitively joins the “black” world, whether he wants to or not. The fact that his death could be likened to a lynching, as the rope catches him “round the neck” and he suffers the fate that many unfortunate souls went through. With his death, Ahab’s indecision about his existence is taken from him and decided by fate, that since he is part black, the choice is not his. Melville makes a dark statement here about fate and race, that Ahab is not able to escape his blackness, that his dream of joining the white world is essentially impossible because of the situation of his birth.

Bibliography
Bernard, Fred V. I know that everyone may be grieving my loss, so the beer is to help people express themselves instead of being somber.

While people watch my pyre float into the distance, they will have time to recount anything about me they wish, good and bad.

If I have a gravestone of some kind, I would like it to read something funny about how I died.
Liminality

Liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold"[1]) is the quality of the second stage of a ritual in the theories of Arnold van Gennep, Victor Turner, and others. In these theories, a ritual, especially a rite of passage, involves some change to the participants, especially their social status.[2]
The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. One's sense of identity dissolves to some extent, bringing about disorientation. Liminality is a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed - a situation which can lead to new perspectives.
People, places, or things may not complete a transition, or a transition between two states may not be fully possible. Those who remain in a state between two other states may become permanently liminal.

What a fantastic word for going to college.
